When “Ally McBeal” star Calista Flockhart began dating Hollywood great Harrison Ford, it made headlines everywhere.
Considering the age difference of 22 years, most of us didn’t believe they’d survive, yet they’re still together and living quietly.
Few of us realise the difficulties they have surmounted during their 9-year marriage, including raising an adopted kid, surviving a plane catastrophe, and dealing with a few scandals.
Their story is told here, and it’s a good one.
At the age of 60, Harrison Ford had already been through two failed marriages and a scandal involving an affair with Star Wars co-star Carrie Fisher when he met Calista Flockhart.
Flockhart claimed that the handsome and charming actor accidentally spilled champagne on her at the 2002 Golden Globes.
“I love you”
Despite the social misstep, sparks between the two were immediate, and they began dating.
Possibly since Ford was still married at the time, the couple denied the rumours and speculation around their romance for a whole year.
On the other hand, he told Hello! Magazine, “I’m in love.”
That following year, the pair decided to live together, and their romance continued to flourish until 2009, when Ford proposed.
While on vacation with Flockhart and her adoptive son Liam in 2009, he proposed on Valentine’s Day, and she said yes.
The next year, they tied the knot in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with rumours circulating that Ford wore jeans to the ceremony.
Ford, who had four of his own, gladly accepted Flockhart and her adoptive kid into his family.
When Flockhart and Ford moved in together, her adoptive son Liam was just two years old.
“She’s brought a child back into my home,” the actor said to Reader’s Digest. “Being a part of a child’s development is like participating in a perpetual springtime.”
Ford, an amateur pilot, was injured in an aircraft accident in 2015, putting the couple’s relationship to the test. Ford suffered a fractured back, shattered ankle and pelvis, and a head injuries.
Fortunately, his injuries from the crash of his World War II-era jet on a California golf course were not fatal.
A report in People states that Flockhart “arrived [at the hospital] early every morning and returned [home] late every night.”
“My wife, who is a wonderful lady, understands my passion for aviation, she understands what it means to me, and she flies with me to this day,” Ford stated following his incident.
Ford, 78, and Flockhart, 54, have been together for 17 years and married for nine.
Their excellent bond is frequently overshadowed by the disparity in age between them of 22 years.
When asked about the age difference, though, Flockhart reportedly said, “Doesn’t faze me.”
“Sometimes I even say, ‘Wow, I keep forgetting that he’s 22 years older than me,'” she says.
They also attribute their longevity to a healthy dose of humour, which is certainly a lesson for the rest of us.
These two are perfect role models for how public figures should handle their personal lives.
