Beginning her career as an actress, Birkin gained international fame for her decade-long on and off-screen relationship with legendary French musician Serge Gainsbourg.
Born in London, Birkin emerged as a rising star in the big city gaining some notoriety in the British film scene before venturing out to Paris where she caught her first big break.
The entertainer starred alongside Serge Gainsbourg in the film Slogan and later the pair did a duet together that propelled Birkin to a whole new level of superstardom - some may say for the wrong reasons as their steamy duet was banned by a few places including The Vatican.
Yikes.
Anyway, the platform meant that the star could continue with her music career, releasing a total of 14 albums over the course of her entire career.
But perhaps the best part of Birkin's legacy is leaving behind the iconic Birkin bag.
As per InStyle, the inspiration behind the handbag came from an interaction between Birkin and Hermès' Chief Executive Jean-Louis Dumas while on a flight.
At the time Birkin was telling Dumas how difficult it was to find a bag that fit her all needs as a parent and apparently that's where the Birkin bag was born.
Our thoughts are with Birkin's family during this difficult time.
