Police have issued a statement regarding the death of singer Sinead O'Connor after her family confirmed new of her passing on Wednesday.
The singer had had an incredible career spanning decades, with one of her most famous tracks being her rendition of Prince's 'Nothing Compares 2 U' in 1990.
The 56-year-old's family shared the heartbreaking news of her death, saying in a statement: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad.
"Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time."
Following the heartbreaking news, police have issued a statement, saying: "Police were called at 11:18 hrs on Wednesday, 26 July to reports of an unresponsive woman at a residential address in the SE24 area.
"Officers attended. A 56-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
"Next of kin have been notified. The death is not being treated as suspicious. A file will be prepared for the Coroner."
O'Connor leaves behind three children - Jake, Roisin, and Yeshua, with her son Shane having died by suicide at the age of 17 last year.
He had tragically taken his own life after leaving a hospital where he had been on suicide watch just 18 months before O'Connor's death.
She had spoken about the loss of her son in a series of tweets just days before her own passing, sharing a photo of the two of them together in happier times.
O'Connor told her followers: "#lostmy17yrOldSonToSuicidein2022. Been living as undead night creature since. . He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul. We were one soul in two halves.
"He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally. I am lost in the bardo without him."
After her son's death, O'Connor also vowed never to sing again, telling fans: "Just to say, suggestions there’ll be any performances this year or next year or ever again are erroneous. There will never be anything to sing about again."
Over the course of her career, O'Connor released 10 studio albums and her cover of 'Nothing Compares 2 U' became the top worldwide hit of 1990.
O'Connor's cause of death has yet to be revealed.
