The Restaurant Was Extremely Busy Today
When Judith came to work that day, she expected a typical shift at the restaurant. She was accustomed to people coming in droves to fulfill their hunger. The eatery was usually jam-packed during the Saturday evening supper rush.
Despite her hectic schedule, Judith made sure to show each family to their seats with the customary care and kindness. Even though she was quite busy with other clients, she felt that something wasn’t right.
Following Instinct, She
Judith’s years of experience in the restaurant industry had taught her to trust her instincts when evaluating patrons. As it was her profession, she was accustomed to reassuring nervous visitors and making them feel at ease.
But when a family of four walked inside the eatery, she got the creeps. As far as she could see, there was nothing out of the ordinary about them. She had a hunch about it, she said.
They Kept to Themselves
Judith must have seen the family many times while serving other customers. They were the quiet ones among the visitors. Given that they were accompanied by two youngsters, she considered this peculiar.
Judith had mixed emotions. She thought this would be an easy table to serve, but the lack of noise from the children was surprising. Children are by definition erratic and unplanned. She was at a loss for words.
As Yet, She Had Not Been Prepared
Judith was well aware that even the best-behaved kids might suddenly change their minds. Nonetheless, she was relieved that the kids weren’t being disruptive. In a crowded eatery, this is one less issue to resolve.
They seemed to be alright when she took their order. She also felt bad about passing judgment on them so quickly. But when the family finished completing their order, her mood shifted.
Atypical Request
When the family completed their food, Judith found out she was right. It was here that she learned the family of four had only ordered three meals. Two adults and two young people were present.
The only item she found was a single lunch intended for one child. There were no accompanying dishes for the main courses. Judith did not understand. What the heck was going on?
Problematical Situation
For what reason did they just place an order for one of their kids? The adult portions were large, but there was not enough for everyone to have seconds. Judith was very concerned about the girl’s welfare.
Judith concluded that the youngster was selective eater. Even still, she thought the parents might have saved money by ordering a lesser portion. She was inspecting the kids to see if there was a problem.
The children were very well-behaved.
The kids were acting maturely; they were courteous and respectful. Something, though, was bothering her. She has seen parents using food deprivation as a kind of punishment for their children. This may be the situation right now.
After some thought, Judith came to the conclusion that denying a misbehaving kid any food at all was a very different thing from just not purchasing them any. She needed to figure out what was going on.
Seeking Assistance
When no one else would help, Judith did. She had a colleague take over the table so she could observe proceedings from a distance. She just cannot keep silent about this. She hoped to sneakily see how everyone was doing at home.

Judith was okay with the idea of sharing her gratuity with her colleague. The children’s safety was of paramount importance, surpassing even the value of the gratuity. When the time came for the family’s order, Judith waited patiently.
Location Optimal
Judith had to hide so that she could watch the household without being detected. She had her pick of spots, including the side of the bar and the space behind it where the wait staff was stationed. The goal was to blend into the background as much as possible.
Since both locations were out of the family’s sight, they appeared ideal. For a little while, she was able to observe them. Judith was devastated by what she observed at the dinner table.
The Girl Child Was Ignored
While her dining companions engaged in spirited conversation, the little girl sat silently. The parents ignored their daughter in favor of chatting to their son. Strangely, she didn’t even smile or giggle along when her relatives told jokes or jokes.
Extremely Close Inspection
Judith volunteered to go grocery shopping. She returned from the kitchen with the main courses and carried them to the dining area. This, she realized, was meant for the guardians. Then she saw the food for the youngsters.
Judith mustered all her might in an effort to speak out. She realized she shouldn’t turn a blind eye and act like everything was OK. The time had come, she decided, for her to make her voice heard.
She felt compelled to speak out.
Judith kept a low profile while keeping an eye on the family. She thereafter faked ignorance about the food they had ordered. She pretended to be perplexed that the girl had to go without eating since there was none available.
She seemed to be perplexed and inquired of the parents whether or not a second supper had been ordered but not received. She enthusiastically offered to double-check the kitchen in case someone had forgotten to take their food.

The response of Judith’s family was surprising. There was a complete pause as everybody froze. More specifically, the girl’s eyes kept darting to Judith as if she had something to say. Judith felt completely at a loss.
The father’s response to Judith’s query was stern. For some reason, she made us apprehensive. To paraphrase, “She isn’t hungry at all,” he remarked. Judith had a hard time accepting this. The evidence was piling up in his prosecution.
Judith’s spirit was broken. She did everything she should have, yet a part of her felt she hadn’t done enough. There was no way she could ignore this problem any longer.
A Depressing Reality
While bringing dishes back and forth from the kitchen, Judith made sure to keep an eye on the household. As she saw the girl’s parents dine with the boy, her heart ached. The girl, however, did not eat anything.
Location Ideal
Judith went to a place where she hoped the girl would be, so that they might have a conversation. A pillar there obscured her from the sight of her parents. They, too, turned around for a little while.
Judith spoke with the little girl through text. She want to inquire as to the safety of the young lady and whether or not she need assistance. But first, she’d have to open up some kind of dialogue.
A Wave
Judith waved at her. The small child did not answer, however. She was perplexed and at a loss for words. Judith needed to come up with a new plan to catch her attention.
Assisting Her is Her Coworkers
Judith felt obligated to share family news with her closest coworkers. She said that the youngster had specifically requested assistance. Thankfully, one of her employees shared her observation.
The Manager Eventually Joined In
Judith’s desire to aid the girl was balanced by her fear of losing her work, so she informed her superiors of her intended course of action. Thankfully, the manager was on board with the idea.
The father of the small girl wiped himself off in the bathroom. Judith realized now was the ideal time to remove the youngster from the dining room. Nonetheless, Judith saw that the mom was staring at her in shock.
The Mother Leant Close and Whispered to Her
The mother cast a quick glance around the eatery to see whether her husband was there. Even now, he had not shown up. The mother took Judith by the arm and drew her in for a hug.
The mother then said something in her daughter’s ear. When the mother ordered Judith to “take her quickly,” Judith was taken aback. Judith did not understand. The mother seemed to be pleading for assistance as well.
Finally Rescued
By helping the child, Judith thought she had the approval of the girl’s mother. They were obviously pressed for time. The girl’s name, she found out, was Anna. Judith could see the girl’s spirits lift as she prepared to leave her abusive father.
She looked directly at him.
Upon emerging from the restroom, Judith was confronted by the man of the house. He looked her dead in the eye. It had set him off completely. He snatched Anna’s hand and hurried back to the dinner table.
She Put Up With It Well
All of the cast and crew of the show expressed their appreciation to Judith for playing along. Surprisingly, she didn’t appear to mind that she’d been pranked. Both Judith’s inner and outer decency shone through.
Anna and her family became friends of hers over time. The group sat down to watch their show together. They had a good chuckle about it today, and were relieved to have become friends despite the ordeal.
