A British man raped a woman in her home while she slept. Now, the 27-year-old sex offender is spending the next five years and four months of his life behind bars for the crime he has committed. However, the suspect recently learned that karma has come knocking in more ways than one – after it was revealed in court that the sex criminal might have contracted HIV, the virus responsible for AIDS, during the unwanted sexual encounter.
At the time of the assault, Thomas knew that his victim was ill. However, he did not know that she was sick with HIV when he decided to rape her without wearing a condom. When the news that the rapist could now be HIV positive reached his ears, reports indicate that he collapsed in court out of desperation and depression.
Ever since he committed rape on the sleeping sick woman, he has tried to get out of facing prison time. He claimed that he was not responsible for the attack because he had been drinking alcohol heavily that night he committed his crime. He had also been abusing drugs like cocaine and ecstasy throughout the evening. He claims that he cannot even remember much of the rape, but he believes his victim’s story and is not trying to pretend the rape did not happen – just that he was not sober when it did.
Police reported that Thomas was on the prowl for a rape victim. He entered the woman’s home without permission and attacked her while she was deep in sleep. The victim had taken a sleeping pill to help her get some good rest but awoke as Thomas was trying to take advantage of her without her consent for him to do so.
“She froze, and no words were exchanged,” said prosecutor Harry Pepper. “He pulled up his shorts and left.”
Thomas’s attorney, Virginia Hayton, claims that Thomas was too intoxicated to remember what happened the night he committed rape. However, he told her that the victim he had assaulted “would not lie, she tells the truth. If she says I have done it, I have done it,” according to the Telegraph. It is not immediately clear if Thomas knew his victim or if it was another random assault on an innocent woman in the country of Great Britain.
Judge Mark Brown sentenced Thomas to five years and four months for the “dreadful offense.” In addition, Thomas will need to be listed on a sex offender list for the rest of his life.
Although Thomas had previous convictions, he had never been caught committing rape before. This marked the first time he was brought before the law for a sex offense.
“[Thomas] is remorseful and cannot understand why he did it, and it is troubling him,” Hayton said.
Thomas began abusing cannabis by age nine, and by eleven, he was drinking alcohol. His lawyer also said her client was addicted to cocaine and ecstasy by age thirteen.
After learning that he might have contracted HIV during the rape, Thomas was sent for an HIV test.
“This [HIV test] has been hanging over his head,” she said, according to the Mirror. “It’s his own fault. If he’d not committed this offense, he would not have placed himself in this position.”
