In a tragic incident that has deeply affected the community of Pike County, Georgia, a rare brain infection claimed the life of six-year-old Leland Shoemake. The young boy fell seriously ill a month ago and was admitted to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta hospital in Egleston, where he fought bravely but, sadly, succumbed to his illness.
Leland's parents, Amber and Tim, stood by his bedside throughout his ordeal, providing unwavering support and love. When they returned home over the weekend, they discovered a poignant note written by Leland: 'Stil (sic) with you... Thank you mom and dad... Love.' Accompanied by this message was a drawing of a red heart with the words "mom," "dad," and "love."
Leland's life was tragically taken by an infection caused by the amoeba Balamuthia mandrillaris. His mother suspected he might have contracted it while playing outdoors, where he loved to explore and play in the dirt.
In her heartbreaking reflection, Mrs. Shoemake shared, 'The one thing he loved most was playing in the dirt. I never imagined that would be the thing that would take him from me. He was my world. He made me a mother. We struggled so hard to have him. Despite being born prematurely, he entered the world with a robust cry and in good health.'
With immense sorrow, she added, 'No one should ever have to bury a child. I always hoped it's me that goes first for I don't think I'm strong enough to handle something like this. It still doesn't seem real to me.'
Before this tragedy unfolded, the Shoemake family had set up a GoFundMe page to cover the mounting medical expenses. The community rallied around them with overwhelming support, and the contributions received will now be used to honor Leland with a fitting funeral service.
Amid their journey, Mrs. Shoemake shared the intense treatment her son endured. Initially, doctors struggled to diagnose his condition, suspecting meningitis before confirming an amebic infection in his brain.
In a poignant update, she revealed, 'He has several teams of multiple doctors working with him and treating him. He's on 10 different medications, and they all have terrible side effects. He has had bad headaches, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, and now his eyes are crossed, and he can't focus on anything without his eyes moving and seeing double.'
The Pike County community came together in a heartfelt vigil to honor and remember young Leland, as reported by WSB-TV. This heartbreaking story serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the enduring strength of a grieving family.
