Her grandmother was a virtuoso violinist, and her mother was also a musician. They had an impact on her life but her father, who is Welsh, got her involved in the cinema. She was able to get into ballet school and eventually, to stage school.
In 1938, she made her debut on the silver screen and it wasn’t long before she was a star. This occurred when she played in the 1941 war drama film, 49th Parallel. She also played in No Highway in the Sky in 1951.
Although she played in many different films, she is best known for playing the suffragist matriarch in the Walt Disney movie, Mary Poppins. This was in 1964, and she ended up getting a Laurel Award for Best Female Supporting Performance.
She continued to star in various films till the 1990s.
Over the years, she has won a number of different awards and nominations. These include Golden Globes, Tony Awards, Academy Awards, Laurel Awards, and Drama Desk Awards.
