Arnold Schwarzenegger is somebody who is known as being a very strong and manly individual. From his weightlifting to his movies and even his time in office as the governor of California, he seems to exude what stereotypical manliness brings to the table.
We know that things change and if you compare today with just a few decades ago, you see that they have changed quite a bit. This is especially true in America where it seems as if one generation after another is becoming more fragile.
Some people consider it to be progress, other people consider it to be heading in the wrong direction. Arnold Schwarzenegger is somebody who feels that people in America are becoming too sheltered and that we are losing the battle when it comes to manliness.
He was speaking out about how many people were coddled continuously. In his words, we are creating a nation that will be a ‘generation of wimps and weak people.’
He brought this out on the Howard Stern Show with a stern warning about the way America seems to be going. Obviously, he has some very strong opinions, but he is also concerned about the way that Americans are turning out these days.
In his words, people who struggle become strong people. He said: “You can only strengthen your character and become a really strong person inside if you have resistance, if you fail, if you get up again and if you work hard.”
76-year-old Schwarzenegger also said that he had a lot of struggles in life and if you do, then you are more likely to succeed in the long run.
He considers society in general to be overly sensitive and pandering to the feelings of younger people. He does suggest that those who are younger learn how to accept pain and misery along with discomfort. It will make them tougher.
This is an interesting point but it’s not necessarily presented in a way that is going to make change.
He went on to talk about how people in his generation really stood out in the way that they strengthened themselves. They would get up at the crack of dawn to fight and struggle and work their butts off. He said that is what made this country great and we need to continue in that way.
He does feel that it is nice to be considerate but that doesn’t mean that we should be babying children. We need to teach children to be tough, to do sports, to struggle, and to deal with painful moments as they arrive.
I’m not necessarily saying that he is going to change everybody’s mind on this matter, but it will be interesting to see where this one goes next.
