It’s a common misconception that just a regular, quick clean of the toilet is enough to ward off limescale, residue, and bacteria. In reality, toilets are hotspots for these and other unwanted build-ups.

But if you’ve tried various methods and still can’t get your toilet back to its pristine state, consider this effective trick:

using salt. Why salt? It’s not just a natural deodorizer and stain remover, but it also possesses abrasive qualities that tackle tough yellow stains and limescale, particularly at the bottom of the toilet bowl and on shower walls.

Salt’s benefits extend to unclogging and freshening up toilet pipes. It’s important to remember that toilets can easily get clogged if items like tampons or wipes are flushed; these should be disposed of in the trash instead. For a clogged and smelly toilet, a glass of salt in the bowl can make a big difference. Let it sit for a few minutes before flushing.

To prevent clogs and maintain cleanliness, add a tablespoon of salt to the bowl with boiling water once a month. Leave it for 15 minutes, then flush.

Boiling water alone can also help with minor clogs. Pour a bucket of it into the toilet, or enhance its effectiveness by mixing half a liter of white vinegar with a liter of boiling water. Pour this mixture into the bowl and let it sit for 30 minutes before flushing.

Interestingly, this salt method is also handy for unclogging kitchen and bathroom sink pipes. So, it’s not just a toilet-cleaning hack but a versatile solution for multiple areas in your home.
