Typically, when we think of rare coins, we picture ones that were struck hundreds of years ago. With a few quarters from the 1970s, though, that isn’t the case. A 1970 quarter was advertised for $35,000 on eBay in 2016. At first look, it could appear to be merely one of those oddball things people occasionally do: post an arbitrary item online for an absurdly high price in the hopes that someone will really purchase it. After all, one’s worth is decided by the price they are willing to pay, isn’t it?

 

Nevertheless, the coin attracted 20 interested bidders and was sold for the $35,000 asking price. The crucial query is, “Why?” Are there other quarters that are worth far more than they appear to be?

A Women’s World story claims that a small quantity of coins struck in 1970 were inadvertently printed over Canadian quarters from 1941! You can actually see the written error once you know what to look for.

Here is a 1941 Canadian quarter for comparison:

You may now make out faint traces of the original Canadian coin on the 1970 quarter. For instance, “1941” printed beneath “Dollar” or printed letters next to “Liberty.”
