A girlfriend was excited to celebrate her first Valentine's Day with her boyfriend. But their romantic night out was ruined and left the woman feeling insecure about herself.

A 27-year-old woman opened up about their Valentine's Day dinner, which left her feeling distraught. She mentioned that she and her boyfriend, 26, had been together for about seven months.

This was the best relationship she had been in, and she loved how intelligent, funny, and attentive her boyfriend was. The couple did not live together but spent three to four nights a week with each other.

Valentine's Day was around the corner, and the Redditor was excited as it was their first one together. She made reservations at their favorite steak house and bought a cute heart-shaped cake for them to eat at her apartment after dinner.

The Original Poster (OP) revealed that her boyfriend was a full-time grad student, and so due to their income difference, she was more than happy to pay for the dinner. The OP gifted him an Apple Watch, which he had always wanted. The girlfriend did not expect an expensive gift from her boyfriend because she was aware of their income gap. She was just excited to have a romantic dinner with him. Still, he arrived looking great and had a card and flowers.

The OP also mentioned that she was 5'9 and pretty slim. It was not easy for her to keep her weight up, but she needed to be at least 125 pounds not to be underweight.

Her boyfriend was also tall and slim but did not have much of an appetite. The couple even liked to joke that the OP ate more than him, but it had never been a problem until their Valentine's Day dinner.

The OP was excited to indulge, so she dove into the bread basket immediately. She then proceeded to order "a salad, surf, and turf (small fillet and lobster tail), and a couple of sides to share (sautéed spinach and mashed potatoes)," she wrote. Her boyfriend only got a soup and a grilled salmon.

Just as intended, the Redditor devoured her meal and only left a bit of the side dishes. On the other hand, her date only got through about more than half of his salmon. The OP started noticing that he got annoyed during their meal, but when she tried to ask if he was fine, he wouldn't say what was wrong.

When they got to OP's apartment, he said he did not want to come in and have the cake with her anymore because he was tired. The girlfriend was disappointed since she had high hopes for their first Valentine's Day.

However, she let him go and tried to kiss him, but he turned his head. The next morning, the OP received texts from the boyfriend admitting that he was not tired; he was just embarrassed by the amount of food the OP had eaten.

The Redditor said she knew it could not have been about how she ate her food because she had excellent table manners, so it was definitely about the amount of food she had. She tried calling him, but he did not pick up and sent messages saying he was not in the mood to speak.

Eventually, the boyfriend said he thought about it and decided it was best for them to break up. He confessed that her eating had bothered him for a while, and he thought he could get over it but realized he could not.

The OP was heartbroken, "I am SO distraught and confused...just yesterday before dinner he was telling me how much he loved me and how lucky he was...and of course feel horrible about myself for being "disgusting" even though if I eat much less I will lose weight and get sick," she wrote.

She turned to other Reddit users to ask if there was a way she could fix her relationship. However, people in the comment section assured the OP she did nothing wrong. A commenter emphasized that having one big meal was not grounds for a break-up.

Other netizens told her to get her Apple Watch back and never to try to fix the relationship. "He broke up with you on Valentine's Day. I'd ask for the watch back. If anyone deserves severance pay, it's you," wrote a commenter.
