In a touching and deeply personal revelation, actor Gary Sinise shared the sorrowful news of his son, McCanna Anthony “Mac” Sinise’s passing, at the tender age of 33.
The announcement came through a statement on the Gary Sinise Foundation website and Sinise’s own Instagram page, detailing Mac’s valiant struggle against a relentless enemy, cancer, which claimed his life on January 5.
Mac’s journey through cancer was a challenging one, starting from August 8, 2018, when he was diagnosed with Chordoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer. This diagnosis came during a particularly difficult period for the Sinise family, closely following Gary’s wife, Moira Harris’s battle with stage three breast cancer. While Moira’s fight ended in victory and remission, Mac’s condition deteriorated, affecting his mobility and strength but never his spirit.
Despite the physical limitations imposed by his condition, Mac’s passion for music never waned. His role at the Gary Sinise Foundation as an assistant manager of education and outreach and his performances as a drummer, including alongside his father in the Lt. Dan Band, showcased his unyielding dedication to his art. A graduate of the University of Southern California, Mac pursued studies in songwriting and composition, and even after undergoing five spine surgeries and facing paralysis, he completed an album titled “Resurrection & Revival” shortly before his passing.
Gary Sinise expressed the profound pain and difficulty of losing a child, reaching out with empathy to others who have faced similar losses. He spoke of the intense battle against cancer that lasted over five years, acknowledging the challenge and the heartache of watching a loved one suffer. Yet, through the grief, there is a sense of peace in knowing that Mac’s suffering has ended and admiration for the courage he displayed in facing such a formidable foe without ever giving up.
Mac’s memory and legacy are cherished by his family, including his parents, siblings, nieces, nephews, and extended relatives. In honor of Mac’s memory and his creative spirit, Gary announced the release of Mac’s album, “Mac Sinise: Resurrection and Revival,” on vinyl, ensuring that his son’s artistic voice continues to resonate and inspire.
As the Sinise family navigates through this period of mourning, they share their story with the world not only as a tribute to Mac but as a beacon of hope and resilience for others facing similar trials. Our thoughts are with the Sinise family during this profoundly difficult time, as they remember and celebrate the life of McCanna Anthony “Mac” Sinise, a remarkable individual whose legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire.
