Purchasing a house is usually a significant financial commitment that completes our move to adulthood. Buying a home means agreeing to live there for the foreseeable future, until your mortgage is paid off, so it’s not a decision to be made lightly.
However, one couple has discovered a cunning way to avoid the sedentary lifestyle that comes with owning a home. The British couple, who enjoy traveling, didn’t think buying a traditional house would be beneficial for them. Furthermore, they were extremely concerned about how Brexit would affect whatever purchases they made.
Instead, they decided to purchase something that would allow them to own something that was exclusively theirs to live comfortably in and the freedom to travel. When they initially looked for RVs, nothing they saw truly fit their vision.
For a while, their search was put on pause, but one day Martin’s casual comment set off a chain reaction that led them in an entirely unexpected route.
While having a few beers with Iona, Martin began thinking about how things are done differently in America. In their shoes, what would an American couple do? Martin made a joke about how the two of them could just buy a “big American truck” and make it their home.
Iona wasn’t laughing, though. Rather, she gave it a lot of thinking, and it started to make increasing sense. Martin had the best idea ever in their relationship, she informed him. The couple hurriedly went onto Ebay to check what was available, and before long, they were purchasing a $4,670 used bread delivery truck.
They purchased it right away.
The couple, thrilled with their acquisition, immediately began imagining how they would transform the enormous truck into their ideal home. After several weeks of meticulous planning, drawing, and budgeting, they arrived at a final budget of $25,000.
Iona handled interior design, but Martin, who had worked as a handyman for a living, was sure he could put together all kinds of useful items. They took four months off work together, using every free moment to turn their truck into a house.
Their combined talents worked wonderfully, and after much effort, they were left with a transformed area that they could only characterize as breathtaking.
From the outside, the truck looks like a weird mix of machine, having the windows and door of an RV, but the framework of a truck. But the interior looks amazing.
When you first walk in, the thing that you’ll encounter the kitchen, which looks like it could belong in any high-end home – large counter tops, full-sized oven, big sink, a stove, plus plenty of storage space.
Then right by the kitchen is the living area, which has a wood-burning fireplace to keep them cozy at night. The L-shaped sofa also doubles as a bed at night. But the sofa bed isn’t for the couple, instead it’s for overnight guests.
Instead, the couple stay upstairs. It’s a short flight of steps, but that is their bedroom. While it’s not huge, there are people who pay a lot more for a lot smaller. The smallest room in the house is their bathroom. It has a tiny sink and toilet and even a shower that’s all in the one room.
Iona also included some personal touches, like painted pictures.
Not long after completing the renovation, Martin and Iona decided to get the most function out of their home. The two boarded their extravagant home on wheels and headed for a ferry to France.
They are now exploring Europe’s mountains, beaches, and variety of cultures, all while coming home every evening to a very unique space.
