When we go out to eat at a restaurant, especially if it is a sophisticated place, we like to dress up, put on some perfume, and get ready to have a nice evening. However, in the blink of an eye, that beautiful moment can turn into a complete horror. Here are some uncomfortable and somewhat disgusting situations that our readers have experienced when dining out.

  • I went to a restaurant and ordered a green salad. I was surprised to discover an insect wiggling its little antennae on one of the leaves. It was a snail without its shell.
I almost fainted. I’m scared to death of all insects. Conclusion: I guess they didn’t disinfect it. Minerva Cruz Rosas / Facebook
  • I used to work in a hotel, and sometimes I had to be the manager on duty. One of my responsibilities was to make sure that everything was in order in the hotel dining room. One night, a couple of diners complained that they had found traces of glass in a portion of peaches in syrup, which I thought was strange. I poured some and also found traces of glass. I ordered the dish to be removed and went to the kitchen to try to find out what had happened.
I soon realized what the problem was: the person in charge of replenishing the peaches wanted to do it as quickly as possible, so he opened the cans of peaches and carelessly threw them into the serving bowl. But he did it so violently that he hit the rim of the container, which was made of glass, so the glass splinters fell out along with the peaches. Obviously, I fired the employee and decided to replace the glass containers with aluminum ones. Pedro Kofmansky / Facebook
  • I went to eat at a restaurant and ordered ravioli. When I poked one with my fork, it was hard. I opened it and there was a cockroach inside. Rodolfo Melgarejo / Facebook
  • I once went to a restaurant for breakfast and the glass of juice had dirty fingerprints on it. I told the waitress, and she said, «I’ll change it right away.» She brought the same glass because you could tell she had tried to clean it.
Also, my husband was given a rusty knife. He told the waitress, and she replied, «That’s just the way they all are.» Of course, we got up, didn’t pay anything, and never went to that chain restaurant again. Sandra Franco / Facebook
  • I ordered a salad, and it had a piece of chewed gum. I discreetly told the waiter what I had found, so that my husband and son wouldn’t hear, but the waiter laughed it off and said, «At least they’ve already done part of the job for you.» My husband and son heard him, and I had to intervene to stop them from giving him what he deserved. Myriam Bargeles / Facebook
  • Once I returned a hamburger because it wasn’t fully cooked, and I had asked for it to be well cooked. When they brought it back, it was the same and colder, because they didn’t do anything to it. We never went back to that place. Sandya Macias / Facebook
  • My sister is allergic to onions. On one occasion, she ordered a dish with no onions, but when they brought the order, it was full of chopped onions. She returned the plate to have it replaced with a new one, and they brought her the same plate without the onions. David Salinas / Facebook
  • Once, my sister-in-law and I went to an Indian restaurant for lunch. I found a hair in the soup, so I took it out of my plate and called the waiter to show it to him and complain. He boldly picked up the hair and dropped it on the floor. Then he told us that he didn’t see anything. I was shocked to see the nerve he had to deny everything in front of me. Yohanna Claros / Facebook
  • In Mexico, there are food carts outside hospitals, right on the street. There was one that sold cold beverages. A man was preparing juice, and he put sugar in it.
Since the spoon could not reach the bottom of the container to dissolve it, he put his arm in it and began to move the water. Yes, his hairy arm. Then he pulled it out, wiped it off, and started pouring the glasses. Never in my life will I buy juice on the street. Karla Silva / Facebook
  • One day I went to eat at an Italian restaurant and ordered grilled salmon. When my plate arrived, I ate the side dish first and the salmon last. On the second bite, I felt something hard. I found those metal hairs that are on the brushes that you clean the grill with. If I had bitten down hard, they would have hurt my mouth and I would have ended up in hospital. Moni Williamson / Facebook
  • One day, my neighbor and I went out to buy popsicles. On the way back, we were chatting when suddenly my neighbor turned to me and said, «My strawberry popsicle has a raisin in it.» And I burst out laughing when I saw that the raisin had legs. It was a fly. We never went back to that ice cream shop. De La Peña Maricela / Facebook
  • I was at a restaurant when I saw the waiter drop the bread basket on the floor. He very discreetly picked it up and served it as if nothing had happened. Sandra RG / Facebook
  • One day I went to eat some tacos. I always like to check what they put in them to make sure they don’t have any bugs. And what did my taco have inside? Two white worms moving around. I still feel disgusted to eat in the street, I’ll never forget that day. Nicol Arcos / Facebook
  • My husband and I went to eat at a restaurant. I ordered a beef broth and there were pieces of chicken on the plate. I called the waiter, showed it to him, and he said, «Give me the plate, so I can change it.» But I replied, «First, bring me the new dish, and then you can take this one.» I knew they were capable of just taking out the piece of chicken. Enriqueta Moreno / Facebook

If you’ve ever gone to a restaurant and received a beautifully-plated, tiny portion of food, you may have been left astonished. After all, it was probably costly, and the portion size probably looked a bit... unproportional. Fortunately, there are interesting reasons for this.
