The Cuban Coast Guard recently stumbled upon an astonishing find in the Caribbean Sea – a vessel identified as the SS “Cotopaxi,” a ship that vanished in the Bermuda Triangle nearly a century ago. The Cuban authorities announced the discovery after spotting the unmanned ship near Havana, in a zone off-limits for navigation, on May 16th. Upon investigation, the Coast Guard team was taken aback to find the ship in a state of significant decay, with no sign of its crew – a clear indicator that the ship had been deserted for many years.
Further examination revealed that this was indeed the SS “Cotopaxi,” known for its mysterious disappearance in 1925. Among the findings on board was the ship captain’s log, tied to the Clinchfield Navigation Company, which owned the “Cotopaxi” at the time it went missing. Rodolfo Cruz Salvador, a Cuban historical expert, confirmed the authenticity of the log, which, while rich in daily entries about the crew’s life, sadly offered no clues about the circumstances leading to the ship’s disappearance.
The last record in the ship’s log was dated December 1, 1925 – the same day the SS “Cotopaxi” sent out a distress signal and then fell silent, marking its vanishing from human knowledge for nearly 90 years. On December 31, 1925, the ship was officially declared missing, adding to the Bermuda Triangle’s mystique. The SS “Cotopaxi” had left Charleston, South Carolina, on November 29, 1925, with Captain Meyer and a crew of 32 aboard, carrying 2,340 tonnes of coal destined for Havana. Its disappearance remained one of the many unsolved mysteries associated with the Bermuda Triangle, an area defined by the points of Bermuda, Miami, and Puerto Rico, notorious for the unexplained disappearances of aircraft and vessels.
While some attribute these vanishings to paranormal activities or even extraterrestrial interventions, most scientists dismiss such theories, pointing instead to navigational errors and natural phenomena. However, the reemergence of the SS “Cotopaxi” after such a long absence has reignited interest and debate in the scientific community, challenging conventional explanations and perhaps urging a reevaluation of the Bermuda Triangle’s enigmatic nature.
