Shocking Ad Cautions Parents Against Sharing Photos of Their Kids Online

Taking a deeper look at the perils of oversharing: Deutsche Telekom's sobering ad warns against sharenting's risks

In today’s age, social media has become a part of daily life. A startling ad campaign by Deutsche Telekom has leveraged this fact and ignited a critical conversation about the potential dangers of sharing photos and videos of children online. The campaign features a deepfake video titled “A Message from Ella,” and has amassed over 5.5 million views within a day.1 This provocative advertisement is a chilling reminder of the alarming consequences of innocent “sharenting” practices (parents sharing their children’s photos and videos) without considering the long-term implications.

The ad revolves around fictitious nine-year-old Ella, whose parents frequently post pictures and videos of her on social media platforms. With the help of advanced AI technology, a deepfake version of an adult Ella is created from just a single photo shared online by her parents. This deepfake Ella confronts her horrified parents out for a date night at the movies, where she reveals the consequences of their actions.

The campaign is meant to highlight the profound implications of “sharenting. Children’s images shared online can be manipulated for nefarious purposes like identity abuse, deepfake scams, abused credit scores, and even child pornography. Shockingly, studies suggest that by 2030, a significant portion of identity fraud cases affecting young individuals will stem from sharenting practices. Despite these risks, many parents continue to share their children’s photos online, unaware of the potential harm they may be exposing their children to.

Raising Awareness and Taking Action

Deutsche Telekom’s #ShareWithCare campaign aims to educate parents about the importance of safeguarding their children’s photos and data online.2 Through the poignant video, a broader dialogue about responsible online behavior and protecting children’s privacy has been brought forward.

The campaign effectively shows the need for parental vigilance and offers practical tips for mitigating risks associated with sharenting.3 Solutions include conscious photo-taking practices, using privacy settings on social media platforms to make your accounts private, and engaging with their children in conversations about online safety. By fostering a culture of awareness and responsibility, parents can play a pivotal role in safeguarding their children’s digital well-being, as well as protect their children through self awareness as well.

Striking a Balance in the Digital Age

As AI technology continues to develop and improve, so too do the risks of sharing children’s photos online.4 The Deutsche Telekom campaign has created an excellent reminder of the dangers lurking in the digital realm and the need for proactive measures to mitigate them. By striking a balance between connectivity and privacy, parents can navigate the online world while making sure their children’s innocence and safety are secured.

While the ad campaign by Deutsche Telekom was (by design) alarming, it serves as a wake-up call for parents worldwide. Please exercise caution when sharing photos and videos of your children online. By raising awareness and implementing prudent measures, parents can empower themselves to protect their children from dark side of the digital age.
