On the fourth stage of the race, the 25-year-old mountain biker from his home country, Team Coop-Repsol, lost control on a descent.
Ineos Grenadiers rider Filippo Ganna won the race, but the podiums and awards ceremonies had to be canceled because of what happened.
After a successful season on the road, Drege was seen as a possible future professional tour musician.
Immediately after the sad news of his death spread through the sport, tributes poured in.

According to the Belgian team Intermarche-Wanty, “We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of our fellow colleague cyclist André Drege. He had a great career ahead of him.”
