A beautiful Mexican singer was performing at the Suntory Del Valle restaurant in the south part of Mexico City when her lawyer husband burst into the room and shot her dead. The singer, 21-year-old Yrma Lydia, who was just beginning her singing career in Mexico, was murdered on Thursday night when her 79-year-old partner Jesús Hernández Alcocer killed her in front of dozens of people and then tried to bribe his way out of trouble with the cops and security guards.
“A man shot his wife three times. He is already detained along with another woman who accompanied him,” said Omar García Harfuch, Secretary of Security for Mexico City.
Someone at the restaurant said that the singer and the gray-haired man had an argument before he removed a firearm and used it to shoot the young singer, who turned out to be his wife. After the murder, Alcocer tried to bribe Mexican police, so he can his security guard could escape to the safety of their home.
Alcocer does not have a clean record. He has previously been accused of extortion, according to a report.
According to Daily Mail, crime rates have risen under Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Gender-based violence has also been a serious problem in Mexico, with ten women murdered on average daily. There have been more killings during President Obrador’s three-and-a-half years in office than in his predecessor’s six years in power. The Mexican president’s predecessor was Felipe Calderon.
While campaigning for his post as president, Obrador often complained that crime was too high under Calderon’s influence. However, crime has been much worse under the conservative president.
Mexico’s most violent state is Jalisco, where ten police officers have been murdered so far in 2022.
Meanwhile, Obrador is taking it easy on criminals. He has announced that his administration will not focus on detaining drug cartel leaders. Back in 2019, he ordered the release of an imprisoned leader of the Sinaloa cartel in order to avoid a bloody cartel war.
Obrador claims that his crime strategy is “hugs, not bullets.” However, he seems to be tolerant of Mexican gangs, even praising them at one point for not interfering in his election.
Recently, the Mexican president was asked if he was going to be tougher on crime and update his policy. He replied, “No, rather the reverse. This is the right path.”
El Universal, a Mexican newspaper, said that Lydia, the singer, had participated in Grandiosas 12. This series hosts a bunch of concerts in Mexico and the United States that bring well-known singers across Central and South America. Some singers who have participated in the event in the past include María Conchita Alonso and Dulce and Alicia Villareal, according to Daily Mail.
It is unclear what Lydia’s relationship was with Alcocer, her husband. However, it is known that she had recently moved out of the family home and into an apartment in Mexico City.
The singer’s friends have taken to social media to mourn her death. One person said, “We will never forget you, your voice, and your kindness.”
Another friend said, “I can’t believe it. I just saw her last week.”
Lydia’s murder is currently being investigated by Mexican authorities. It is unclear if Alcocer will face any charges at this time.
