2000s popstar sparks mixed reactions over dramatic change

Nelly Furtado was a household name two decades ago but slowly she disappeared from the limelight. Now she's back and looks a lot different...

Aging is a natural part of life. As most people age, they start to look different than they used to before. While most people take the changes in stride, others are not as pleased.

Celebrities, much like anyone else, also experience aging. And it is usually female celebrities who are scrutinized for each and every change their appearance undergoes whether naturally or artificially. This is a similar story; a 2000s mega popstar being viewed critically simply because she has gotten older.

Canadian artist Nelly Furtado first popped onto the scene right around 2000. She was once considered one of the most successful Canadian artists by the media. Her 2000 album ‘Whoa, Nelly!’ was a massive success.

The album received success both critically and commercially. Her songs “I’m Like a Bird” and “Turn Off the Light” from the album both made it to the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In fact, the success of the former song even earned her a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

While everything seemed amazing at the time, it later emerged that things were not as they seemed on the surface. In a recent interview, the songwriter opened up about how she struggled in her initial days of fame.

She talked about the extensive airbrushing she was subjected to. “I have olive skin, and they’d kind of lighten my skin a lot in photos, and kind of take my hips down all the time — they would always cut off in editorials,” she said.

In 2003, she released the song ‘Powerless’ on her album ‘Folklore,’ which talked about the experience. In the lyrics she sings, “Paint my face in your magazines / Make it look whiter than it seems / Paint me over with your dreams / Shove away my ethnicity.”

The singer, who is of Portuguese descent, revealed recently, “By my second album, I guess I was kind of angry about it.”

While she has faced many challenges, she does not hold any grudges and is grateful for her experiences.

She credits her matriarchal family and her supportive team for giving her a sense of assertiveness and guidance which have helped her navigate the industry successfully so far.

She stepped away from the spotlight at one point so she could focus on her family. She has three children, the eldest of whom is her 21-year-old son Nevis Gahunia.

After she gave birth to her youngest two children with just a 14 month different between them, she found out she had attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The celebrity mom recognized the symptoms in herself when she was caring for her children. She got an official diagnosis as a result. She shares her younger two children with, rapper Jerry (Gerard Damien Long).

While she had lived with ADHD her entire life, it was taking care of her youngest two children, both of whom were so close to each other in age that she was able to get a diagnosis.

She revealed, “When I was attending college, [I was like] ‘Boing, boing, boing, boing.’ I’ve had it my whole life. But when I had my two youngest in close proximity, it made me very aware of my ADHD.”

Since her diagnosis, she has made sure to be mindful and present amid everyday distractions. She makes sure to prioritize sleeping, exercising, and maintaining a routine. She believes that when she is in the dance studio, her ADHD is kept in check.

Recently, the singer released her first album in seven years, which has put her back in the spotlight. She has performed some of her new music live, and those performances have started conversations!

A Facebook user wrote about her appearance, “What a beautiful woman,” while another shared, “She actually looks a whole better than what she looked like in 2006 [sic] thicker more voluptuous body after having kids. Perfect I love it.”
One person was incredibly angry at those who were shaming her for her weight gain, they wrote, “So, she gained some weight. So, what! She still looks gorgeous. This obsession with weight is ridiculous.” “She looks better with the curves,” another person said.

On X (formerly known as Twitter) users also noticed her new figure, one user posted, “Nelly Furtado so [expletive] thick,” remarked. Another person wrote, “She was skinny when she was younger…BUT NOT NOW!”
