Trevor Lawrence announces birth of first child. Here’s what he named her and others like it!

Trevor Lawrence is starting the new year with a new cheerleader in his corner.

The 25-year-old Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback welcomed his first baby — a 10 pound, 2 oz little girl — with wife Marissa Lawrence on Jan. 4 at 4:01 a.m..

“Mommy and daddy love you so much!!! Thank you Jesus for our girl!!” the couple wrote in a Jan. 6 announcing her arrival.

Many people took to the comment section to share their congratulations, including the Jaguars’ official team account and several of his teammates.

“Congrats to the Lawrence’s,” the Jaguars wrote in a comment, while teammate Daniel Thomas added, “Congrats bro!”

The proud parents named their newborn daughter Shae Lynn Lawrence.

The name Shae comes from the Irish name Séaghdha, which is believed to be derived from the Irish word ségda, meaning “fine,” “good,” “favorable,” or “learned,” according to Behind the Name.

It’s surprisingly much more unique than you’d think.

Shae failed to crack the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) top 1,000 most popular girl names of 2023 and has only appeared on the annual list once since 1900 — doing so in 1998.

Even its close variant, Shea, hasn’t cracked the SSA’s list since 2008. But another variant, Shay, has grown more popular in recent years — landing on the list each year since 2020.

As for the baby’s middle name, Lynn is derived from the Welsh word llyn, which translates to “lake” or “pool,” according to Behind the Name.

Variants and diminutives of the name Shae

When looking for names that are similar, it’s always best to start with variants and diminutives.

A variant is a different form or version of a name that maintains a similar structure to the original name but might differ in spelling, pronunciation, or style.

For example, Catherine is a spelling variant of Katherine and Elisabet is the Swedish variant of Elizabeth.

A diminutive is a shorter or “pet” form of a name that adds suffixes, shortens the name or modifies it to make it feel smaller, cuter or more informal.

For example, Katie is a diminutive of Katherine and Lisa is a diminutive of Elizabeth.

Let’s take a look at some variants and diminutives (or, in this case, augmentatives) of the name Shae!

The name Séaghdha is the origin form of the name Shae. As explained above, it’s believed to be derived from the Irish word ségda, meaning “fine,” “good,” “favorable,” or “learned.”

It’s a name you don’t see anymore, but it can be an interesting option for Irish-speaking families who want to revive an Old Irish name. Today, most people in Ireland would choose Shae, Shea or Shay.

9. Shea

The name Shea is the Anglicized form of Séaghdha, meaning “fine,” “good,” “favorable,” or “learned.” It’s sometimes used as a feminine name, but is most commonly used as a masculine name in Ireland.

As for the United States, Shea is primarily a girl’s name — though it’s not that popular today. It first appeared in the SSA’s top 1,000 in 1971 and remained popular up until 2008, when it fell off the list.

8. Shay

The name Shay is another Anglicized form of Séaghdha, meaning “fine,” “good,” “favorable,” or “learned.” It’s most popular in England and Wales, where it’s primarily used as a masculine name.

In the United States, Shay was most popular as a boy’s name between 1970 and 1995, but is now being used as a girl’s name — ranking inside the SSA’s top 1,000 each year since 2020.

7. Shaella

The name Shaella, pronounced SHAY-lah, is an invented variant of the name Shae. It’s similar to the name Shayla, but can also be pronounced SHAY-ella if you want to give it a more unique sound.

While Shaella hasn’t appeared in the SSA’s top 1,000 in any year since 1900, the name Shayla was fairly popular between 1970 and 2016 — though it hasn’t cracked the list since.

6. Shaerel

The name Shaerel, pronounced SHARE-uhl, is a variant of the name Shae with -rel added as a suffix. It’s essentially an alternate way of spelling the name Cheryl, which means “darling” in French.

You could probably guess that you won’t find the name Shaerel in the SSA’s top 1,000 — and you’d be right — but don’t expect to find Cheryl either. The former top-20 name hasn’t cracked the list since 1997.

5. Shaene

The name Shaene, pronounced SHAYN, is a variant of the name Shae with -ne added as a suffix. It’s also an alternate way of spelling the name Shane, which ultimately comes from the names Sean and John.

While Shaene isn’t popular enough to land in the SSA’s top 1,000, its close variant Shane is. In fact, it was the 555th most popular boy’s name in 2023 and appeared on the girl’s list in 1972, 1973 and 1974.

4. Shaelette

The name Shaelette, pronounced SHAY-let, is a variant of the name Shae with -lette added as a suffix. It’s closely related to the name Shayla, which some people believe to be a variant of Sheila.

Like most Shae variants, giving your child the name Shaelette will almost guarantee that they grow up with a name not duplicated in most schools, churches or sports teams — if any, at all.

3. Oshae

The name Oshae, pronounced O-shay, is derived from the surname O’Shea, which is the Anglicized form of the Irish surname Ó Séaghdha — meaning “descendent of Ó Séaghdha.”

Oshae can also be a variant of the Hebrew name Oshea, which is derived from the Biblical name Hoshea, meaning “salvation.” In the Bible, Hoshea was eventually given the name Yehoshua’ (Joshua) by Moses.

2. Shaelene

The name Shaelene, pronounced SHAY-lene, is a variant of Shae with -lene added as a suffix. It’s closely related to the name Shailene, as in actress Shailene Woodley, and means “gift” in the Hebrew language.

Neither Shaelene or Shailene have appeared in the SSA’s top 1,000 most popular girl names since 1900, but that just means your daughter will grow up with a unique — yet still recognizable — name.

1. Shaelee

The name Shaelee, pronounced SHAY-lee, is a variant of Shae with -lee added as a suffix. You can also spell it Shaeley, Shaely or Shaeleigh to add a little flare to the name — but it’s unique either way.

Perhaps the most popular version of this name would be Shaylee, which landed inside the SSA’s top 1,000 every year between 1997 and 2010, but hasn’t returned since.

Baby names with a similar meaning to Shae

Other unique Irish girl names

Much like the SSA does in the U.S., the Central Statistics Office is the statistical agency responsible for gathering information relating to economic, social and general activities and conditions in Ireland.

Part of the data they’re responsible for is baby name popularity.

In 2023, the top ten girl names in Ireland were Grace, Fiadh, Emily, Sophie, Lily, Ellie, Mia, Amelia, Éabha and Ella. None of those names were in the top ten in the U.S., but most were in the SSA’s top 1,000.

While the name Shae failed to crack the top 100 in Ireland, the name Shay did — albeit on the boy’s list.
