‘101 Dalmatians’ actress Dame Joan Plowright dead at 95

Dame Joan Plowright, a British actress best known for her roles in “Dennis the Menace,” “101 Dalmatians,” “Curious George,” and more, has died.

She was 95 years old.

 

In a statement shared by her family, they wrote Plowright “enjoyed a long and illustrious career across theatre, film and TV over seven decades until blindness made her retire,” according to Fox News.

Theatres across London’s West End will dim their lights for two minutes at 7pm on Tuesday 21 January in remembrance of renowned British stage and screen actress Dame Joan Plowright, widow of Laurence Olivier, who died earlier this week at the age of 95.

 

Fox News reports Plowright died Thursday, Jan. 16, at Denville Hall, “a retirement home for actors in southern England.” “We are so proud of all Joan did and who she was as a loving and deeply inclusive human being,” the statement continued. In 2004, Plowright was made a dame by the late Queen Elizabeth II. She was married to actor Laurence Olivier for 28 years before his death in 1989. According to the Associated Press, over her career Plowright won a Tony Award and two Golden Globes.

 

She also received an Oscar nomination and an Emmy nomination. “Theatres across London’s West End will dim their lights for two minutes” on Jan. 21, according to the Society of London Theaters. Plowright was a mom to three children. She had two daughters, Julie Olivier and Tamsin Olivier, who followed in their parents footsteps becoming actresses themselves. She also had a and son, Richard Olivier, who is a theater director.
