Life is full of surprises, and we never know what challenges we might face. But no matter what happens, we should keep fighting and believing that things can get better.
Chelsea Hough was excited to meet her baby. Her pregnancy went smoothly, and at 36 weeks, she gave birth to a baby boy named Karson Jax Hough.
At first, Karson seemed completely healthy, but suddenly, his heartbeat slowed down and then stopped. Doctors placed him on his mother’s chest for skin-to-skin contact, and his heart started beating again—but only for a short time. He needed a ventilator to help his heart and breathing.
Karson’s grandmother, Lisa Hough, said that the only way to describe what happened was that he had two very rare and unrelated conditions. One of them had no clear cause. Doctors believed he had a hemorrhage in the left side of his brain and a rare genetic disorder called nonketotic hyperglycinemia (NKH), which causes a buildup of glycine in the body.
Doctors said his chances of survival were very low. After some time, they advised the family to remove him from life support.
After thinking it over, the family decided to follow the doctors’ advice. As they prayed together, they were told they would likely have only about 10 minutes with Karson before he passed away.
As soon as the ventilator was turned off, Karson suddenly started breathing on his own. The doctors were shocked and called it a miracle.
“Today, we witnessed a miracle!” his grandmother, Lisa Hough, wrote. “We were told he would only have 10 minutes without life support before his heart stopped… but God and Karson had other plans!”
Lisa admitted she once doubted they would be blessed with a miracle. She didn’t know how much time they had with Karson, but she was grateful for every moment they got.
Once Karson was home, he continued to grow stronger. His weight was healthy, his heart rate stayed stable, and his glycine levels dropped significantly. Every day, he kept proving the odds wrong.
We wish this precious baby a happy and healthy life ahead!
