Phil Collins Opens Up About Health Challenges: ‘I Can Barely Hold a Drumstick’

Phil Collins, iconic Genesis drummer and singer, reveals his struggle with nerve damage, impacting his ability to play drums.

Phil Collins, the legendary drummer and lead vocalist of Genesis, has candidly discussed his ongoing health challenges that have significantly impacted his drumming abilities.

In a 2021 interview, Collins revealed, “I can barely hold a [drum] stick with this hand, so there are certain physical things which get in the way.”

Born on January 30, 1951, in London, England, Collins developed a passion for music early on. By the age of five, he was already experimenting with makeshift drum kits, a testament to his innate rhythm and dedication. His early exposure to the English beat scene of the 1960s further fueled his musical ambitions.

Collins’ career took a monumental turn in the 1970s when he joined Genesis as their drummer. Following the departure of lead singer Peter Gabriel, Collins stepped up as the band’s frontman, showcasing his versatility as both a vocalist and drummer.

Simultaneously, he launched a successful solo career, delivering hits like “In the Air Tonight” and “You Can’t Hurry Love,” solidifying his status as a music industry powerhouse.

Despite his illustrious career, Collins has faced significant health setbacks. A spinal injury in 2007 led to nerve damage, severely affecting his ability to play the drums.

He underwent surgery in 2009 to repair dislocated vertebrae in his upper neck, but the nerve damage persisted, making it challenging for him to hold drumsticks.

Given these challenges, Collins’ son, Nic Collins, has taken over drumming duties during live performances, especially during Genesis’ “The Last Domino?” tour.

Phil Collins continues to contribute as the lead vocalist, delivering performances from a seated position due to his health constraints.

Collins’ resilience and dedication to his craft remain evident as he adapts to his physical limitations. His openness about his health struggles has garnered widespread support from fans and the music community, underscoring the profound impact he has had on the industry.

As of December 2024, Collins participated in the web documentary “Phil Collins: Drummer First,” where he shared his journey and experiences, offering fans an intimate glimpse into his life and career.

Phil Collins’ legacy as a musician is marked by his exceptional talent, adaptability, and unwavering passion for music, inspiring countless artists and fans worldwide.
