Madeleine McCann’s disappearance remains one of the world’s most haunting unsolved cases, and a recent documentary has reignited global attention.
While Kate and Gerry McCann have not publicly responded to the revelations in the new film, Kate has previously opened up about one painful regret that continues to haunt her nearly two decades later.
The case has resurfaced in headlines following the release of The Unseen Evidence, a documentary co-produced by Channel 4 and The Sun. The investigation exposes new and disturbing details linked to the main suspect, Christian Brueckner.
Among the revelations: police recovered 75 children’s swimsuits, toys, and a hard drive with explicit material during a 2016 raid on Brueckner’s German property. Most shockingly, six USB sticks and two memory cards were found buried under his dog’s corpse.
Despite the chilling discoveries, Madeleine’s parents have remained publicly silent, though Kate’s past words continue to echo in the minds of many.
The McCann family’s 2007 vacation in Praia da Luz, Portugal, was meant to be a peaceful getaway. But the night of May 3 turned into a living nightmare when three-year-old Madeleine vanished from their holiday apartment.

The McCann family’s 2007 vacation in Praia da Luz, Portugal, was meant to be a peaceful getaway. But the night of May 3 turned into a living nightmare when three-year-old Madeleine vanished from their holiday apartment.
Guests and staff searched through the night, hoping she had simply wandered off. But as morning came, that hope faded, and Madeleine was never found.
Years later, Kate revealed the moment that still weighs heavily on her heart: a note written by resort staff that may have unintentionally helped the abductor.
In her memoir Madeleine: Our Daughter’s Disappearance and the Continuing Search for Her, Kate described how they had requested a specific table at the resort restaurant that gave them a view of the apartment.
They asked to be seated near the room so they could check on their sleeping children every 30 minutes. A receptionist had noted this request in a booking log, including the reason why.
“To my horror,” Kate wrote, “the receptionist had added the reason for our request: we wanted to eat close to our apartments as we were leaving our young children alone there and checking on them intermittently.”
The note, written in a book at the poolside reception, stated that the same table be reserved every night at 8:30 p.m., with the children alone in their apartments.
Kate fears that someone may have seen the note and used it to plan Madeleine’s abduction.
“We now bitterly regret it and will do so until the end of our days,” she confessed.
Although the McCanns haven’t responded directly to the new documentary, they did issue a public message just days before its release, marking 18 years since Madeleine’s disappearance.
In a heartfelt post dated May 3rd, they thanked long-time supporters for their continued compassion: “As we arrive at the 18th anniversary of Madeleine’s abduction, we’d like to thank our faithful supporters once again for standing by us and never forgetting about Madeleine.”
They acknowledged how quickly time seems to pass, adding: “Whilst we have no significant news to share, our determination to ‘leave no stone unturned’ is unwavering. We will do our utmost to achieve this.”
The couple also reflected on the significance of May, not only the month Madeleine vanished, but also her birthday. She would be turning 22 this year.
“No matter how near or far she is, she continues to be right here with us, every day, but especially on her special day,” they wrote. “We continue to ‘celebrate’ her as the very beautiful and unique person she is. We miss her.”
