Tracey Nix has just been given a sentence after a second grandchild died while she was watching them.
A troubling pattern has come to light.
This isn’t the first tragic incident to happen while Nix was responsible.
Less than a year before Uriel died, her other grandchild, 16-month-old Ezra Schock, drowned while she was caring for him.
Reports say Nix had fallen asleep, and Ezra crawled under a fence and into a pond.

He was found dead in the water — a heartbreaking situation no parent should ever go through.

Kaila Nix-Schock, the mother of both Ezra and Uriel, has now lost two children in separate accidents that happened while they were with her mother.
Details shared about the second baby’s heartbreaking last moments:

In November 2022, Uriel died after being left in a hot car for several hours. She overheated and didn’t survive.

Investigators said Nix’s husband tried to save the baby using CPR, but it didn’t work.

In a recorded interview, Nix said she parked in the yard and went into the house, completely forgetting that Uriel was still in the car.

“It’s not like I was in a hurry… I just forgot,” she told detectives.

She said she spent a long time playing piano and even talked to her dog before realizing the baby was still in the car.

The 65-year-old grandmother said there was nothing stressful going on that day.

She simply forgot her seven-month-old granddaughter was in the backseat.

“I’m heartbroken about what happened,” Nix said, adding that she’s not trying to make excuses.

But many people are upset by her explanation, especially since something similar had already happened before.

The Polk County community has been deeply affected by these events.

Online, many people are expressing anger and disbelief at how the grandmother could seem so disconnected.

Uriel’s death is now part of a heartbreaking trend across the country, with more than 30 children dying each year after being left in hot cars.

Child safety experts are urging caregivers to use tricks — like leaving a shoe or phone in the backseat — to help them remember the child is there.
Details of the grandmother’s court case:

During the sentencing, Kaila, filled with emotion, faced her mother in court. She was clearly torn between love for her mom and the pain of losing her children.

“I hate that I had to choose, but you know I had to,” she told her mother through tears.

Judge Brandon Rafool was direct: “Uriel is not an isolated incident.”

He said the court didn’t believe Nix was truly remorseful — just sad.

Nix stayed silent during the trial and didn’t speak in her defense.

In Ezra’s earlier death, she had been charged but found not guilty of aggravated manslaughter.

She was convicted of leaving a child alone and causing serious harm but didn’t serve major prison time then.

This time, prosecutors focused on the repeated carelessness.
Grandmother’s sentence revealed:

Kaila testified against her mother, saying it broke her heart to do so.

Nix was sentenced to five years in prison.

Her lawyers haven’t said yet if they’ll appeal the decision.
Community continue to mourn.

Whether people see it as a heartbreaking accident or careless neglect, the result can’t be changed.

The court has made its decision and the sentence has been given — but for this grieving family, the pain goes far beyond the courtroom.
