After losing her husband to can.cer years ago, Pauline had been managing everything on her own, doing her best to give Eve a happy childhood despite their financial struggles.

 

While wandering through a flea market one day, Pauline spotted an old-fashioned doll that she immediately knew would be perfect for Eve’s birthday.

 

Money was tight, and she couldn’t afford a fancy present, so finding a gem at the flea market felt like a stroke of luck. Without giving the doll a thorough inspection, her mind consumed with thoughts of making Eve happy, Pauline eagerly bought it.

“Mommy, can I have a doll?” Eve asked, her voice tinged with sadness.

Pauline was overjoyed as she wrapped up the doll, picturing Eve’s bright smile. It was a beautiful vintage piece — a motherly figure clutching a tiny baby.

“Eve, look what Mommy got for you!” she beamed, holding the doll out dramatically. “How about a kiss for Mommy?”

As Eve eagerly reached for the gift, a strange crackling sound came from the doll.

 

Curious, Pauline shook it gently and heard the sound again. She held it closer to her ear and noticed a seam that looked tampered with. Carefully pulling at the loose stitching, Pauline discovered a hidden note tucked inside.

Eve grabbed it first and read aloud, giggling, “Happy Birthday, Mommy! But it’s my birthday, not yours!”

 

When Pauline examined the note, she noticed the childish handwriting. Her thoughts drifted to the woman who had sold her the doll. Wanting to find out more, Pauline decided to return to the flea market the next day.

 

Fortunately, the woman, Miriam, was still there. When Miriam saw the note, tears immediately welled up in her eyes. She shared that her daughter had gifted her that doll, but had tragically passed away just days before Miriam’s birthday.
