“Devastating”: On Memorial Day, a deputy was shot and murdered while performing their duties

MARENGO, OH (Gray News/WXIX)— Officials in Ohio say a deputy was shot and killed on Memorial Day while performing his duties. According to the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office, Daniel Weston Sherrer, a 31-year-old deputy, was shot while responding to a domestic complaint at a residence in Marengo, which is roughly 35 miles northeast of Columbus.

According to Morrow County Sheriff John L. Hinton, Sherrer passed away from his wounds after being transported to the hospital. The sheriff posted on the department’s Facebook page, “The subject was also shot and was taken to a hospital in serious condition.” “There are no words to describe the suffering that our office is going through.”

On May 16, 2021, Sherrer started working at the sheriff’s office. Investigations are being conducted by the Ohio Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) and the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office. “The death of yet another Ohio law enforcement officer who gave his life in defense of his community breaks my heart.
