Following the unexpected deaths of Liverpool player Diogo Jota and his younger brother in a terrible automobile accident in Spain, the soccer community is in shock. Jota, a 28-year-old forward for Liverpool and an important member of Portugal’s national team, was assassinated alongside his 26-year-old brother, André Silva, in the northwest Spanish town of Zamora.
Silva was a member of the second division Portuguese team Penafiel. Jota married Rute Cardoso two weeks ago, and the two of them had three young children together.
In a sincere statement, the Portuguese Football Federation said,
“The deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva this morning in Spain have devastated the Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football.” In addition to his remarkable 49 caps with Portugal, they commended Jota for his contagious happiness and the respect he received from both opponents and teammates.
Jota played for Portugal in the 2019 and 2025 UEFA Nations League championship teams. Peace be with you, Diogo Jota. Fans all throughout the world were moved by your talent, enthusiasm, and attitude. Too suddenly gone, but always remembered.
