Almost 400 corpses were found piled high at the Mexico-US border, according to investigators.
383 complete human corpses and 6 partial remains were discovered in Juarez, just across the border from El Paso in Texas – as reported by KVIA in an alleged secret crematorium.
The remains, discovered after a tip lead police to search the property on Thursday, are said to have been deceased for three to four years.
Most of the bodies seemed to be embalmed, according to Mexican authorities.
Owner Jose Luis Arellano Cuaron and an employee will be charged with a case of improper disposal of human remains.
An investigation into the remains is ongoing, to check they are not victims of murder.
Officials have revealed the bodied seem to have come from six various funeral homes and the families of the deceased were given ‘ashes’ that they believed were from their loved ones.
‘They constantly received bodies for cremation,’ Chihuahua Attorney General Cesar Jauregui said. ‘They misrepresented hundreds of times to funeral companies they would be cremating those bodies.’
The Governor labeled the owners of the operation ‘irresponsible and unscrupulous people who misused these licenses and permits.’
Families who believe their loved one could be one of the bodies have been asked to bring in an official ID and a physical description of what they were last wearing.
