Six Dead, Including Three Children, After Helicopter Crashes Into Hudson River in New York City

NEW YORK CITY — Tragedy struck Thursday afternoon when a helicopter crashed into the Hudson River near Pier 40, killing six people, including three children.

The fatal accident occurred around 3:15 p.m., when a Bell 206 helicopter went into a deadly spiral before plunging into the waters between Manhattan and the New Jersey waterfront. The horrifying scene was captured in chilling videos shared across social media, showing the aircraft spinning out of control before the impact.

Victims Identified

According to initial reports, among the victims were the head of the Spanish branch of the technology giant Siemens, along with his family members. In total, five family members — including three children — lost their lives in the crash.

The sixth victim was the helicopter’s pilot, whose identity has not yet been publicly released pending notification of family.

Eyewitness Accounts

Eyewitnesses described the moment as “unreal,” with one bystander stating: “It looked like the helicopter split in half when it hit the water. People were screaming and running to the pier, but there was nothing anyone could do.”

Boats nearby immediately rushed to the scene, but rescuers were unable to save those onboard. Authorities later confirmed that all six occupants were recovered from the wreckage.

Investigation Underway

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched a full investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Early indications suggest a possible mechanical failure, but officials stress that it is too early to draw conclusions.

New York City Mayor’s office released a statement expressing condolences: “This is a devastating tragedy. Our thoughts are with the families of those lost, especially the children whose lives were cut far too short.”

A Community in Mourning

The accident has shocked both the local community and international circles, given the high-profile victims involved. Siemens has yet to issue an official statement, but colleagues and industry leaders have begun sharing tributes online, describing the executive as a “visionary leader and devoted family man.”

As the investigation continues, officials urge caution around the crash site and have temporarily restricted boat traffic in the area.
