CINCINNATI (WXIX) - The man charged with the aggravated murder of a Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office deputy made his first court appearance Saturday.

More than 30 members of the sheriff’s office filled Hamilton County Courtroom A early Saturday as 38-year-old Rodney Hinton Jr. stood before a judge, less than 24 hours since the deputy died.

Hinton, Jr., who Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge says is the father of the 18-year-old killed in Thursday’s officer-involved shooting in East Price Hill, “intentionally murdered” the deputy, Cincinnati Fraternal Order of Police President Ken Kober said.

With eyes locked on Hinton Jr., he stood motionless inside the courtroom, letting his assigned public defender speak on his behalf.

The attorney said Hinton Jr. has no felonies on his record and this is an “emotionally charged situation.”

Hamilton County Municipal Judge Tyrone Yates ordered Hinton Jr. to be held without bond until his next court hearing on May 6 at 8:30 a.m.

Hinton Jr. is at the Clermont County Jail for his safety, the judge announced.

The deputy was outside his vehicle helping manage traffic at the intersection of Martin Luther King Drive and Burnet Woods Drive when a car drove into the intersection and hit him around 1 p.m., said Lt. John Cunningham with Cincinnati Police.

The deputy, whose name has not been released, later died at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, according to police.

Hinton Jr. was identified as the father of 18-year-old Ryan Hinton, Lt. John Cunningham said.

Cincinnati police have identified the man killed in the officer-involved shooting Thursday as 18-year-old Ryan Hinton, according to Lt. Cunningham.

Police say Ryan Hinton was one of four people inside a stolen vehicle that was found in a parking lot Thursday on Warsaw Avenue in East Price Hill.

All four took off running and two were taken into custody, police said.

One of the two suspects, identified as Ryan Hinton, was still on the run and pointed a semi-automatic handgun at an officer, according to Chief Theetge

The officer shot at the armed suspect, Ryan Hinton, who died, the police chief said Thursday.
