Louisiana Parents Charged with Murder After Baby Suffers Severed Spine and Broken Ribs

Two Louisiana parents, Kaylee Fontenot and Taylor Broussard, have been arrested and charged with the murder of their two-month-old daughter after the infant suffered what authorities described as horrific abuse.

The nightmare unfolded on October 25 in Opelousas, when police responded to a call about a baby who had stopped breathing. The little girl was rushed to the hospital but didn’t survive. Doctors discovered devastating injuries: multiple broken ribs, a severed lower spine, and clear signs of severe dehydration and starvation.

Detectives quickly learned that Fontenot and Broussard had been the child’s sole caregivers since she was born. Warrants were issued for both on charges of first-degree murder, cruelty to juveniles, and second-degree battery.

Fontenot was taken into custody right away. Broussard, however, stayed on the run for over a week before turning himself in on November 3. He’s now being held in St. Landry Parish jail alongside the baby’s mother.

Opelousas Police Chief Graig LeBlanc called the case heartbreaking. “No child should ever endure this kind of suffering,” he said. “We’re still piecing together exactly what happened, and our team won’t rest until every question is answered.”
