It’s always tough when someone passes away suddenly, especially in such a tragic way. But when the President of the United States chimes in with something that feels more like a jab than a condolence, it really stirs things up.
The news about Rob Reiner and his wife Michele has been heartbreaking. The well-known director and his wife were discovered dead in their Brentwood home in Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon. Police are treating it as a homicide, and sadly, their son Nick has been arrested and is being held in connection with the case.

Rob Reiner wasn’t just a Hollywood legend—he directed classics that so many of us grew up loving. But he was also deeply involved in politics, often speaking out as a strong Democrat. He pushed hard for things like gay marriage rights and better early education for kids. People who knew him in that world described him as someone who really dug into policy, not just showing up for the glamour.
He never shied away from criticizing Donald Trump. Years back, he called Trump unfit for office, saying he didn’t understand government and had no real interest in learning. More recently, while promoting a documentary on Christian nationalism, Reiner didn’t hold back, pointing out what he saw as hypocrisy in how some excused Trump’s behavior.
In one interview, he admitted Biden was getting older but said it was still better than having a “criminal” in charge—referring to Trump’s legal troubles.
Trump clearly noticed all this over the years. And now, after the tragedy, he posted on Truth Social about the couple’s deaths, tying it to what he called “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”
He wrote something along the lines of it being a sad event in Hollywood, describing Reiner as once talented but tortured by this “incurable” obsession with him, even suggesting it drove people crazy and played a role in what happened.

A lot of folks aren’t taking it well. Reactions online have been strong—one person called it shameful and a new low, while others labeled it disgusting or a monstrosity. Some even brought up past controversies, wondering why this kind of response gets a pass.
It’s a tough situation all around—a family dealing with unimaginable loss, a community mourning a creative force, and politics mixing in when maybe it shouldn’t.
