George Clooney Claps Back at Trump with Epic Response Over French Citizenship Jab in 2026

George Clooney isn’t holding back after President Donald Trump took a sarcastic swipe at him and his wife Amal over their new French citizenship.

The Clooneys, along with their young twins, have been spending more and more time in France over the past few years. George has always loved the place—he’s got that stunning villa on Lake Como in Italy, but back in 2021, he and Amal snapped up a beautiful old winery estate called Domaine du Canadel in Provence, near Brignoles.

He’s been pretty open about how much happier the family feels there, away from the constant Hollywood spotlight. France’s strict privacy laws have been a big plus too, making it easier to shield the kids from paparazzi and give them a more normal upbringing.

Recently, the French government officially granted citizenship to George, Amal, and the children. It’s a special recognition for people who boost France’s global image through culture or other contributions—George in film, Amal with her international human rights work.

Trump, who’s never shied away from feuding with Clooney (a longtime vocal critic), jumped on the news with a New Year’s Eve post on Truth Social. He called it “good news” in that mocking way, labeling the couple “two of the worst political prognosticators of all time” and tying it to his gripes about France’s immigration policies and crime issues. He even threw in digs at Clooney’s movies, saying they were “totally mediocre” and that George got more attention from politics than acting. Trump wrapped it up with his signature “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Clooney didn’t let it slide. In a quick statement, he fired back cleverly: “I totally agree with the current president. We have to make America great again. We’ll start in November.” (A clear nod to the upcoming midterms, hinting at a possible shift.)

He also chatted with Variety about how things used to be friendly with Trump before politics got involved. “I knew him very well back then,” Clooney said. “He’d call me up, even helped me get in to see a back specialist once. We’d bump into each other at clubs or dinners. He was kind of a big goofball. That all changed, though.”

It’s the latest chapter in their long-running back-and-forth, but Clooney seems unfazed, focused on family life across the pond.
