The case that shocked doctors occurred after a girl of only 10 years old contracted a severe case of chigger, which became so complicated that it frightened everyone who came into contact with her during the period in which it all happened.
The girl is reportedly English but was spending a few days in Brazil when she contracted shingles. Her parents discovered the infection upon her return home. The cause is unknown, but they took her to the doctor for evaluation 10 days later.
By the time they sought medical help, the case was already serious, complicated, and so terrifying that it became news in the scientific journal The New England Journal of Medicine.
According to the doctors who treated her, the bacteria on the 10-year-old girl’s feet were successfully removed through a surgical procedure. After the removal, the area was treated with topical antibiotics.
What is a chigger?
A chigger is an infectious episode caused by the female parasite Tunga penetrans, which enters the skin through contact of the feet with contaminated soil. Hence the importance of not walking barefoot in areas where it may be present.
Signs and symptoms:
Itching is the main symptom; shortly after contamination, the affected area begins to show one or more dark brown spots.
