'Instinct took over' | Triple shooting victim explains why he tried to help

Michael Hennessey is recovering in the hospital after he was shot twice in the Muncie triple shooting on Mother's Day.

MUNCIE, Ind. — Every day, twice a day, Michael Hennessy drives on South Walnut Street in Muncie to pick up and drop off his friend, but on Sunday, he witnessed something worth stopping for.

Hennessey saw a man pulling a woman by her feet down the sidewalk around 5:30 p.m. May 10.

"I've seen that and instinct took over, I guess," Hennessey said.

Hennessey and his friend got out of his truck to help the woman.

"It's what I do. I try to help people," Hennessey said.

When shots broke out, Hennessey tried to run for cover, but he said bullets hit him twice. He added that he even coughed one up in the ambulance.

"I'm alive and kickin' it still," Hennessey said.

Hennessey wants two things.

"I don't care about what anybody says. I just want my friend to be alright, and I want to be out of this freaking hospital," Hennessey said.

Hennessey especially looks forward to return to his work as a local contractor.

Sarah Beach told 13News that Hennessey repaired her front door just days ago.

"Him trying to help that woman exemplifies that his is a nice man and the kind of person you want in your community," Beach said.

Hennessey hopes that in a few weeks, doctors will clear him for work so he can repair Beach's garage and finish repairing a roof for another person.

"To be honest with you, I wasn't surprised he was trying to help someone, and I think that's mostly some of tragic part of this story. He was literally just trying to help someone, he represents the very best in Muncie," Beach said.
