What happened to Madeleine McCann?
According to Daily Telegraph, Gerry and Kate McCann from Leicestershire were vacationing in Praia da Luz, Portugal, with their three kids — Madeleine, Sean, and Amelie. In order to meet friends for dinner at a tapas bar in the Ocean Club resort where they were all staying, the McCanns left their sleeping kids in their vacation apartment at 8.30 pm. By 10 o'clock in the evening, Kate went back to the apartment to check on the kids and found Madeleine's bed vacant and the child gone.
Following an anonymous tip, Robert Murat, a British ex-pat who lived close to the resort where Madeleine disappeared, was identified as a suspect in the investigation. Despite being the focus of sensational media rumors, the computer consultant was never detained in connection with Madeleine's disappearance. Detectives named Madeleine's parents as suspects after further interviewing them, which led to significant media speculation that the McCanns were involved in their daughter's abduction.
The McCann case was put on hold by the Portuguese attorney general after concluding that all available channels of inquiry had been exhausted, and the suspect status of the McCanns and Murat was lifted. After being cleared, each of the three received several hundred thousand pounds in libel damages. Later, a 43-year-old German man was named as a new suspect in the case by German detectives after he was imprisoned for raping a 72-year-old lady in 2005 in the same town where Madeleine vanished. He was identified as Christian Brückner.
According to BBC, Brückner, known only as Christian B in Germany for legal reasons, was not charged because of a lack of evidence, according to prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters. The whereabouts of the missing child remain a mystery for a long time. ‘The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann,’ a new documentary series from Netflix, reignited rumors regarding her whereabouts.
