Melania Trump's legal team calls Hunter Biden's comments 'false, disparaging, defamatory and inflammatory'
Melania Trump has announced that she intends to sue Hunter Biden for a staggering $1 billion over remarks he made linking her to convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
This is the latest twist in the long-running Epstein saga. In a recent interview, Hunter Biden — the son of former president Joe Biden — claimed that Melania had been introduced to Donald Trump by Epstein himself.
Speaking to filmmaker Andrew Callaghan, Biden said: "Epstein introduced Melania to Trump - the connections are so wide and deep." He also added in the same conversation that he believed certain alleged Epstein files could “implicate” former President Trump.
According to the BBC, Melania’s legal team sent Biden a formal letter demanding that he retract the comments, which they described as “false, disparaging, defamatory and inflammatory.” They also insisted he apologize, warning that failure to do so would lead to a lawsuit worth at least $1 billion.
The letter points out that part of Biden’s claim appeared to stem from journalist Michael Wolff, who, in a since-deleted Daily Beast interview, suggested that Melania was “known” to one of Epstein’s associates at the time she met Trump.
Following pressure from her attorneys, the outlet removed the story entirely after receiving their own legal letter from Melania’s team.
In the archived version of that Daily Beast article, there is now a correction that reads: "After this story was published, The Beast received a letter from First Lady Melania Trump's attorney challenging the headline and framing of the article. After reviewing the matter, the Beast has taken down the article and apologizes for any confusion or misunderstanding."
No verified evidence has surfaced to support the claim that Epstein introduced Melania to Trump. Melania herself has stated that she met Donald Trump in 1998 at a modeling agency party in New York City.
At that time, Melania would have been around 28 years old, while Trump was about 52.
When the BBC asked Melania’s lawyer, Alejandro Brito, about the potential lawsuit, he referred them to a statement from her aide, Nick Clemens, which read: "First Lady Melania Trump's attorneys are actively ensuring immediate retractions and apologies by those who spread malicious, defamatory falsehoods."
Epstein, a wealthy financier, was well-connected in political, business, and celebrity circles before being exposed for the sexual abuse and trafficking of underage girls. After securing a controversial plea deal in 2008, he was arrested again in July 2019 on federal sex trafficking charges. Just weeks later, he was found dead in his Manhattan jail cell, an incident officially ruled a suicide.
Theories about his life and crimes have circulated for years, with some people insisting he maintained a secret “client list” implicating high-profile figures in his operations.
During his 2024 presidential run, Trump promised to make public certain court-sealed documents related to Epstein’s case.
However, both he and U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi later appeared to back away from that pledge, with the FBI stating that no such “list” actually exists.
While Trump and Epstein were once friendly, their relationship eventually broke down. According to Trump, this happened after Epstein began trying to hire away members of his staff.
"He took people that work for me, and I told him, 'Don't do it any more'. And he did it. I said, 'Stay the hell out of here'." the former president told reporters.
