My mother-in-law booked my restaurant for her party and requested I stay away—she forgot one detail.
The call came in the middle of a normal Tuesday, the kind of normal that only exists when people are smiling at you while keeping a secret.
My assistant manager’s voice was tight, careful. “Mrs. Chen… your mother-in-law just booked The Grand Maple for this Saturday. Fifty guests. A four-course dinner.”

He looked away. “She’s not really a foodie.”
“She eats, Marcus. Everyone eats. She’s been to plenty of restaurants—just never mine. She’s had plenty of family celebrations—just never included me in the planning. She talks about her friends’ children’s accomplishments constantly—but has she ever once mentioned to anyone that her daughter-in-law owns four restaurants?”
“You’re being dramatic.”
The words landed like a slap.
“I’m being dramatic,” I said slowly. “Got it.”
I turned to leave.
“Viv, wait—” He reached for my arm. “I’m sorry. That came out wrong. It’s just… she’s my mother. And she’s getting older. And I don’t want to spend what time she has left fighting.”
“So I should just take it? Just accept being erased?”
“I’m asking you to be the bigger person. Just this once.”
“I’ve been the bigger person for twelve years, Marcus. I’ve smiled through holidays where she introduces me as ‘Marcus’s wife’ without mentioning my name. I’ve listened to her talk about other women she wishes you’d married. I’ve watched her give credit for my success to you, as if you’re the reason I built anything.”
“She doesn’t mean—”
“Yes, she does. She means every word, every slight, every casual cruelty. And you let her because it’s easier than standing up to her.”
He looked at me then, really looked at me, and I saw something I hadn’t seen before: resignation. He’d already chosen. He’d been choosing for years.
“What do you want me to do?” he asked, and his voice was so tired.
“I want you to uninvite yourself from Saturday,” I said. “I want you to tell your mother that if I’m not welcome, neither are you.”

The Decision

He stood up, threw his napkin on the table. “I can’t win with you. Whatever I do, it’s wrong.”
“You could try choosing me,” I said quietly. “Just once. You could try putting your wife before your mother’s ego.”
“That’s not fair.”
“Neither is any of this.”
He left. Slept at his brother’s house that night.

Her face went gray.

“Or what?”

The party ended at 10 PM.
